Garden tree wash

Hi, does anyone know what the

ingredients are  in Winter tree wash. Growing Success are the manufacturers. Unfortunately D.T Brown Did not find out what it contains. The email address.  [email protected]     are not responding and the web site www.growingsuccess.org.uk do not bring up any results for me. Can anyone help as the price over £12.00 a bottle seems on the highside For something I cannot find out about.

The Vitax Winter Wash does not list any ingredients on the bottle. BUT it does claim to be made from natural oils and surfactants (soap to most people).

  • Thank you Berghill,

i think it is a bit expensive if it's just soap, I've got plenty in a hand wash bottle that is much cheaper.

  • I think Berghill is spot on.  These companies won't tell you the exact ingredients as they would consider it a trade secret but if you were worried about it containing something in particular (such as neonicotinoids), they may be more happy to tell you that their product is free of it.

Edit: just saw your reply.  I would only consider using horticultural soap in the garden.  Maybe try a mixture of that and neem oil if you want to DIY.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I cannot understand why the email address and web page stated on the bottle are incorrect.

looking at the label it looks like the one you know about called Vitax but the name is Growing Success.

Never bothered looking at the website for Vitax. Been using the wash for the last 20 years and we are still here. Does work as well as anything. Certainly when I did not wash the apple trees with it (spray on a wind free day.....hah rare as hen's teeth in this garden) we had a terrible season of Codlin moth and Plum moth infestation.

    This is Vitax website address

In France and Belgium they use a lime solution to paint the trunks of trees, especially fruit.  It serves two purposes - killing over-wintering bugs and eggs hiding in the bark and, in sunnier regions, protects against sunburn.  Apparently, on clear winter days dark bark can absorb enough heat to get the cambial tissues growing prematurely before the roots are active and that can lead to dehydration.

We will be trying it in this new garden, just as soon as OH has strimmed all the grass and weeds from around the base of the trunks.

  • Thank you all for your support

. D T Brown have said i can return for full refund of the product and that is what I will do. VItax seems a genuine product, will have a look at that.

According to this link it "Contains food grade fish oils and sesame oil". Paying over £12 for something that you can probably mix up yourself with soapy water seems a bit steep: www.interhort.com/_images/_attachments/7084.pdf
