When to prune a fig tree
in Fruit & veg
I have a large, old, neglected fig tree in a walled garden. I am unsure as to when is the best time to prune it - advice seems to vary from "by Christmas at the latest" to "early spring" to "anytime"! I understand they are one of the trees which is liable to severe bleeding if pruned at the wrong time of year. I am in the South West so the climate is not so severe.

I would prune in Dec/January http://www.gardenersworld.com/article-search/?searchterm=pruning-fig
Reads Nursery has a very good video online - but I'm afraid the website is down at the moment. I'm sure it'll be up and running before long .

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I have a large, over grown, unproductive fig in this new garden and it is sorely in need of sorting out. Dove kindly gave me that ling a week or tow ago and it's very helpful. I'm waiting for all the leaves to drop so I can see what I have and will then prune it quite severely to improve its shape and incite it to produce fruits. Just need a dry day with no frost forecast so wounds can heal with no damage.
Formative and shaping and reducing in the dormant period and for fruit producing, a summer tip prune.
