I bought a gentian from our market the other day, but it is un-
labelled. Can anyone please identify it and also tell me how to
care for it? It is more mauvey-blue than the photo shows.

Looks like a G.auculis hybrid, but there are lots of different Gentians.
Most are best grown in rockeries [ or similar ] as they are alpine plants.
Unfortunately different species require very different conditions, some only surviving in acid conditions, others needing lime.
Most prefer a moist soil.

It may be ' angels wings' or 'devonhall' difficult to tell properly.
Many thanks for the advice; I'm still hoping for a more positive ID, as I know they have different requirements.
Can you take a close-up photo Sally? Being able to see the anthers etc may help with ID.
If it is flowering at this time of year then it is one which needs acid soil conditions. Spring flowering gentians can take alkaline soil.
Needs lots of water when they begin to regrow in late Summer and a good dollop of Yak manure!
