Moving a small Japanese acer

Can I move a small 50-60cm high Japanese acer? It's currently not unhappy, sheltered beneath an apple tree near a fence, but it's hiding which seems such a waste! It's been there for at least 10 years

Yes you can, although of course no guarantee it will survive.

Now would probably be a good time, unless you are due to get the heavy snow that we are forecast.

Remember they like some shade, hate windy exposed conditions and like a moist humus rich soil,

How can you lie there and think of England

Make sure the new site has adequate moisture - especially in spring - so prepare that well before moving it. If the ground's dry where it is just now it could be tricky to get out. You might be better waiting for a while if that's the case. Most acers round here are now dormant and the ground's wet, so it depends on the conditions in your own garden.

Follow doc's advice re the location you choose for it. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Also avoid an east-facing situation if you can.  The early morning sun they get in such a position warms frozen buds or foliage too quickly and does them no good at all.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
