I pick leaves up with the mower, admittedly a big ride on, but have always mown up leaves and I find them useable by next year.
No idea why it should take 2 years unless you want 100% bona fide leafmould. I've used the "compost" as a mulch the following spring and certainly it'll all be gone before the first leaves fall next year.
The soil will benefit just as well if you were to dump the leaves on top of it, they don't need to break down fully before you use it as that will happen anyway. Presumably the only reason to collect them is purely aesthetic? If it's easiest for you then put them in your compost and just use it when the rest has broken down, any leaves not broken down by them will continue do so afterwards, no need for bags or special compost bins taking up room.
