  • thank you pansyface,

can I prune the roots at the same time.

  • You don't want tree roots just pushed into the planting hole so they end up twisted or circling round - that will cause problems for the future. Better to do some judicious pruning if necessary so the root system will develop into a good shape. By moving now the tree will be able to start establishing new roots before the leaves come out in the spring.

Also make sure you keep the stem collar above the soil surface and that there are no roots circling round the base of the trunk.

  • Thank you all,

my trees are 3yrs old, I want to move them to give them move room.

I was going to measure 30" from the trunk and mark a circle and cut all the roots off,

it will probably end up bare rooted by the time I get it up.

  • I think that'll be plenty big enough for a rootball for three year old trees.

    Good luck. image
