Peter Beales is near me too, when I'm not in France.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Lizzie I'm inclined to agree, really, although I do contain one of mine on what I think of as an arch, it is actually nearly five feet long and I have to prune Mme Alfred Carriere quite hard to keep her on it. It's quite capable of covering the wall of a house (my other one is trained on a fence and currently cover an area about 15' x 8' - and that was after a hard prune last year when I moved her from her previous, outgrown, location! So probably not the best choice if the arch is only narrow. There are plenty of climbing roses that only grow to 10' according to David Austen, so one of those would probably be a better bet. What about Claire Austen?

Thanks everone, think i will take professional rose advice before jumping in, if i plant rose on left side of arch, if it got very long it could continue into greengage tree at the other end ? i've got a lot to learn about roses!

Shropshire Lad is a lovely peachy pink with a great fragrance.  Mine does well on a pergola - covers it but not too vigourousimage

Clare Austin, I've heard (haven't got it) can have heavy flowers that hang their heads. There is a lovely little white rambler called Snow Goose, repeat flowering, from David Austin. A friend has it on an arch, gorgeous.

I have A Shropshire Lad, beautiful shaped flowers and almost thornless, but it doesn't have a lot of flowers at a time. Does yours, Chicky? Mine is in a large pot though, up a pillar.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Hi chicky i saw shropshire lad on david austins site too, lovely colour, do you think i could get away with one either side if they are not too tall, being greedy now ?

My Shropshire Lad has quite a lot of flowers and repeats well - never completely smothered, but the only ones that do that for me are the once flowerers (cecile brunner and pauls Himalayan musk)

loana - think you could have one either side - in which case youcould try two varieties.  Shropshire Lad goes well with whites.  You have to be careful with other pinks, as SL is too "peachy" to mix well with other pinks.  Winchester Cathedral is a nice white that doesn't hang its head

OK, scrub that thought image winchester cathedral is only a shrub, not a climber.

My SL is planted with a climbing Iceberg ......

  • Shropshire Lad is on my plant shopping list at the moment, funnily enough I want it to go on the opposite side of my arch to Mme Alfred Carriere. It's on the shady side with quite dry soil and close to a hedge, so I wanted something thornless as I have to get up close and personal when pruning on that side!
