Fruit Trees Braeburn

My Braeburn container tree has only had a few small apples ,which I have put down to infrequent watering, has now got some blossom and some new buds.

If I prune it back to be like a minarette tree, will it fruit like a minarette next year, or will it be better to buy new trees?

  • pansyface,  thanks for your reply,

Not in southern hemisphere, in west yorks,

not expecting anything from flowers or buds, just threw that in as further info!

pruning routine not followed due to health problems, done by son (who knows even less than me)

    minarettes look neater!

fed with growmore and tomato feed, but irregularly could maybe do with re-potting, will try when dormant

insects? there's been a bumble bees nest under the shed just five yards away, other fruit trees in nearby gardens, they haven't done very well either except the apple tree in the empty house next door, that's a full sized tree that has never been pruned or fed!

This morning I saw a squirrel in the pot, he (or she) has been burying some bird seed

plum, cherry and pear trees have done nothing either, think I'll re-start for next year

    regards

  • Once again, thank you for your reply.

Yup, repotting could be a good idea, then if it doesn't work I can blame number one Son,(he'll be doing the work).

Not pruning for two years, that'll do me!

    Will report back in 2018

Further to this thread, the apple tree seems to be doing well, blossom was plentiful but now gone.

Now have fruit buds, about twenty groups each with between five and ten fruits, is  this too many?,

would  it help to thin them out so as to produce less  but bigger fruit?

Most trees naturally shed some fruit in or around June .- This is called The June Drop -wait until after that has happened before you decide whether you need to remove any more. image
