Tree and stump removal

Hello, I need your advice. I have this old tree in the garden that's half dead and dangerously leaning towards our house. I want to hire a tree surgeon to remove it and the stump as well. I've checked a few companies and they offer using stump killer to remove the stump faster. I was wondering if I go for it do I have to ask the company if they have license for that? I suppose they'd be using some chemicals to kill the roots?

I've never had to deal with this before and don't know what's the procedure. Any advice is welcome.

choose a company that uses a stump grinder. Remove it completely by mechanical means, no chemicals

I'd also suggest the stump grinder route; a tree surgeon took down out tree and "killed it" with chemicals. Near two years later the stump is as healthy as ever!

I agree - have the stump ground out.

I had a 100ft+ tree felled some yrs ago. The remaining stump was just under 6ft across - they quoted me £150 to grind out the stump, I declined, but now wish I had as the 6ft stump is still there and a waste of space in the middle of what is now a border

  • I'm also thinking about avoiding the chemicals. I was just wondering if it's legal to use chemicals, but since Clarington says that tree surgeon "killed" a tree, I guess there's not problem. I guess I'll just stick to stump grinding and play it on the safe side.

I don't know what the chemicals are, but when they cut down trees here, they cut 3-4  shallow lines in the top of the stump then paint on some blue stuff - job done

Grinding the stump out would be my preferred solution, assuming there is access to get the machine into your garden.

I have had both done - got the stumps ground out when they were going to be in the middle of my new border and had chemicals put on a pear tree stump where it was not causing a problem. Took about 6 years for the chemically treated one to be soft enough to chip out by me. As opposed to stump grinding which was instantaneous. You pay your money and take your choice!
