Ivy or the tree roots

I have been trying to dig up some Ivy that has wrapped it's roots around a tree. The area is covered in about 2 inches of gravel on top of weed control fabric (which is being removed), while pulling up the weed control I found a large mass of fine roots. I can't tell if they belong to the tree or the Ivy any idea's? I don't want to damage it if they're tree roots.

I've posted photos below, apologies they are a bit blurry.

If they are above the weed control fabric, they are ivy. Pull them off. Most tree roots go down before they branch into very fine feeding roots.

Thanks I wanted to be on the safe side as our soil is quite hard compacted clay and the thick tree roots are kind of on top of the soil, and it's also very difficult to dig to find out who they belong to!!
