Can Japanese plums survive UK winters?

I'm in the South East and I imagine the most extreme mid-January overnight low would be about -10 Celsius.
Planted outside, can Japanese plum trees survive British winters?
Ideally I'd like an Eriobotrya Deflexa but have not seen these in the UK. Eriobotrya japonica 'coppertone' are sold here as a garden plant, but advertised as being tolerant of only -5 Celsius.
Is there something that can be done to protect them from the freeze?

Hi Glen, I have a very productive one called 'Lizzie' which does great in Leicestershire. It is absolutely covered in blossom in spring and crops at the end of July. I usually have to thin the crop otherwise the weight breaks off branches.
