Pruning Buddleia
I have a beautiful buddleia in my front garden which is a haven for bees, butterflies and birds. I usually prune it early spring (March) and it does wonderfully. However, during the winter is casts shadow on our front garden and we are now experiencing anti-social behaviour because the area is dark. Security lights are being installed but can I cut back the plant now or will I lose it? Can anyone help?

You can prune Buddleia at any time and as hard as you like, it is bombproof.
Buddleia are extremely robust as far as pruning goes and I would have no worries about cutting it back now, Arlene. You could cut it back to about 3ft tall and then cut back further in the spring to low shoots. I've even cut mine right back to the ground not caring if I lost it but it came back and put on 2m of growth in a single season!
I cut back buddleia at the start of winter to 3ft or so, to minimise wind rock. They're not deep-rooted.
Thanks so much to all of you who have given me such great advice. I'll cut mine back and hopefully with security lights the problem will (fingers crossed) be sorted during the dark winter. Much appreciated!
