Chocolate cosmos problem

hello,

so i bought 2 chocolate cosmos and they both looked pretty healthy in the nursery. since getting them home and planting them out i've noticed a few of the flower heads are dying before properly opening out. the petals, when closed, look quite hard and normally drop off or go crispy before they can fully open.

some, however, are opening up and looking lovely.

i've been cutting off the dying or dead heads when i spot them but wondered what could be up and if it's a diseased plant that i need to burn : (

My Chocolate Cosmos is getting ready for winter and all its flowers look like yours. I will be drying it off shortly and protecting its tuber for the winter. The nights are getting colder now and it needs some winter protection as it is not reliably hardy in the UK.

it looks like either over or under watering. I would bet on under watering.

I wouldn't grow anything too close to them either as they'll take the water and nutirnets away from the cosmos.

yes, nothing more serious than cool night temperatures.

you will need to pop them back into their pots and put in the gh.  Keep on the dry side now and remove any dead or dying flowers, stems and leaves.   You are growing it for next spring now image

although i'm wondering if a decent layer of mulch or fleece would do the job to save disturbing them?
