Acer foliage in autumn

I purchased a dark red leaf Acer last spring. It was very healthy and had lots of foliage. I had positioned it in a shaded spot at the front of my house and all was well until I returned from my summer holiday to discover that my friend hadn't watered it in 2 weeks. Most of the leaves fell off. Some regrow but most didn't. I have now planted it directly in the ground near my rockery, Alpine and pond area. I still haven't seen any new leaves but there are lots of buds. Is this normal and will it all regrow in the spring?

I am no expert but since you are seeing lots of buds then I think your Acer may well survive.  I think the stress due to the lack of water was the cause of the leaf drop.  See what others say though.

  • Our acers are dropping their leaves now, there are buds which I don't expect to develop now until next Spring. Plants in pots here need to be watered every 2 or 3 days, but they fare better if planted directly into soil where the plant roots can establish deeper in the soil.  I would think that your Acer will start up again next Spring.

  • Thank you! Thought I'd lost it forever. I'll be patient until spring. image
