Bare root roses

Hi all,

I bought 2 bare root roes in Lidl yesterday.. A climbing iceberg rose and floribunda waltz time rose. I'm just wondering if it's ok to store these over winter and plant in spring when soil and garden is ready?

Otherwise i can pot them up in 3 litre pots with good compost until i am ready to plant out in garden. Should i add some bone meal?

Just wondering which is the best option?image

Thanks

Jaffa, best thing is to heel them in a quite unused spot in the garden. Just need a slit trench then heel them in.

They need to be soaked in a bucket of water for 24 hours to re-hydrate the roots and then you can either heel them in as Dave suggests or plant them in large pots in a sheltered corner.  Try and find some microrhyzal fungae mix to sprinkle on the roots as you plant them.   They'll grow a fine set of roots over winter and should then make a good display next summer.

  • Thank you both. Have them soaking in water today and will heel them in tomorrow. Didn't manage to find any microrhyzal fungae so will try without and hope for the best. They cost very little anyway image

IN that case, add some bonemeal to the slit trench but work it in a bit and use it when you do plant them out next spring.

  • Thanks  Obelixx & Verdun. Missed your post. They are in the ground now. Hopefully i will see growth next year. There was some green shoots on the climbing rose already. Good to know about fish blood and bone. image
