Acer soil

Can anyone tell me the best soil type for potting on an acer?

  • A John Innes one, No.3, but I like to add some leaf mould as it has a natural balance to it.

    Hi Meomye,

A free-draining loam-based compost, such as John Innes No.2, mixed with some organic matter, like leafmould if you have it, is ideal. Acer prefer slightly acidic conditions.

    Snap, H-C!

I went off to answer the phone before pressing 'post', hence the time gap!

  • I do that, wander off in the middle of something. Hmm, what causes that, I wonder?

The phone always seems to ring whenever I'm in the middle of something (especially when I'm at the bottom of the garden) and I've found that it's fatal to pour a cup of tea or start eating, as interruptions are then inevitable!

  • Nothing worse than a fresh HOT cup of tea e wasted!

Do I have to wait until the spring or can I do it now?

  • Best wait until spring when the roots will start growing again, Meomye.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
