Privet

I have a 7ft privet hedge that I wold like to cut down to about 6ft, when is the best time to do this please, and will it grow back on top OK? Thanks.

    Spring would be my advice. If you do it now, you'll be left with bareness all winter. No worries about it growing back in spring .

  • Cut very early spring if spring is early as it has been for a few years now and give it a good feed.

    If your wanting it to finish at 6ft I would cut down to 5 1/2ft then let it grow back to 6ft. Cut it at 6ft and it will finish somewhat higher at the end of the first season and you'll quickly be back where you started.

    totally agree cottage , a slow release fertiliser. Anx grim it back to any height you want. Their as tough as old boots Stephen

    Unless of course you get birds nesting in it. In which case I would do it now.

    If you do it now thats fine. But  you won't see much growth until next spring..
