We lose crocus to mice as the squirrels so far have not managed to penetrate the garden. We think the cats keep them out, but cannot keep pace with the mice population.

Looking at the damage I would say badgers, but easy enough to tell. Go look for their latrine. Deep hole filled with large black droppings (Black from the chitin of the beetles they like to crunch).

Don't go boasting about painting things with creosote or urine. It is possibly illegal to interfere with badgers in that way, unless you are the government in which case you may shoot them.

Squirrels happily turf plants out of pots so that they can bury nuts.

Fairy...this year's Sphaerocephalon bulbs are going into two half barrels which have potentilla in them. Not so easy for the squirrels to get at them, I hope.

Joyce - I have lots of them in one of the raised beds, but the little blighters have been in at them already  image

I planted a load of them in a big pot last year, and put netting on them. I've just planted them out in the new border and put mesh in to foil them. The water scarecrow gives them a fright too  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • My chief suspect is a fox. I haven't caught one red handed (pawed) but I've seen a couple pass by. My suspicion is due to the size of the holes, unless a squirrel was astonishingly ambitious and there are no badgers around here. I just need some evidence that foxes are attracted to bulbs.
