Clay lawn

Our lawn is really soggy and clay like. My husband has made deep holes in the lawn and added sand to it. However my husband is insisting on still watering the lawn.

I feel that this is adding to the problem. Could someone tell me what he should do. I am totally stressed out looking at my once beautiful lawn.

thanking you in advance.

Where in the world do you live Amlum? There's really no need to water a lawn unless you're in the driest of areas and the lawn is actually dying and you're getting rain for weeks or months during summer.

Ours (Yorkshire; UK) is never watered unless it's been treated with a feed. It sorts itself out; I like to think that the roots are forced to go deeper resulting in better growth when they are made to search for water.

  • One advantage of having a clay-based soil is not having to water it too often. I'd make the most of it by planting beautiful bog plants (majestic gunnera manicata, lobelia cardinalis, bog beans, water forget-me-nots, candelabra primulas. purple loostrife etc) . I wouldn't bother working against your soil type, work with it. I'd love to have clay soil as I do like bog gardens. There's something sumptuous and luxurious about a bog garden.
