Fungi on lawn

I have just discovered three clumps of Fungi on my lawn.

can anyone explain why this has happened and how to get rid of it

  • I would say the spores find it favourable conditions there, your best bet is to aerate the lawn & increase drainage. Will be late for this year but should help in the future. You can use a pitchfork. Scarifying the lawn will help as well to remove any dead matter.

  • It'll be growing on the remains of old roots which have died. Just brush them off.

    We had a tree felled last year - we've got very similar fungi feeding on the rotting roots underneath the lawn right now.  They'll disappear when the weather gets colder until this time next year when they'll reappear  and they'll do that every autumn until the roots are totally broken down - part of Nature's autumn glory - nothing to worry about. image

    they look a bit like puffballs (common not giant unfortunately) still edible but not as tasty as the giants!

    Spangle, we can't see the underneath of them - do they have stems and gills?

  • Coprinellus micaceous - edible when young. Should turn black soon. Growing on dead wood under the grass.
