When best to pick tomatoes

I have tomatoes fruits on my plants now but they are all green at the moment. I don't want to pick them too soon off the vine so they begin to die but don't know the best way to help them ripen.... should I leave them in the soil/pot so they ripen naturally or should I bring them indoors now... any ideas?

  • I would leave them on the vine unless you have a frost coming. When I take green tomatoes in, I put them in paper lined flats, single layer, and put the flats on my selves in the cold room in the basement. They always ripen up except for some of the tiny ones.

Sorry what do you mean by flats?

  • I just use plant trays that you bring your plants home from the garden centres in. Could use boxes or crates.  Don't cover them up, give them air.
