Thanks thats very helpful. I'm going to go ahead and give it a try. The alternative would be moving huge amounts of soil and having to dig down at least a meter to get to the root.
More than a metre, possibly. I've been trying to get rid of it in my patch; dug it out as far as I could then digging out shoots to about a foot deep as they appeared for about a year. Still growing so I took a shovel and dug down to about 4 feet and found a root about as thick as my forearm growing straight down. I couldn't dig any further so I drilled into it and filled it with glyphosate. several times. It's still growing 6 months later.
Someone has actually researched this and measured a 10yr old plant, its stems, main roots and lateral roots. Main roots went down to 10 to 12 ' so I reckon you need to use a brushwood killer direct on the roots or else let some green foliage appear so that it can absorb glyphosate and pass it down t othe roots. Whichever you choose, I reckon you'll need several applications to kill it.
I have been to a local garden and agricultural supplies place where chappy says to forget glyphosate for plants with deep or strong roots. He's sold me something more serious. I'll let you know how I get on.

I grew horseradish in a Long Tom pot and it went through the drainage hole and the bottom and through the gravel the pot was standing on and I couldn't actually pick the pot up.

No more horseradish! The only place it belongs is in a small jar in the herb section at the supermarket. ?
