How to keep birds off newly seeded lawn

Hi, I would be interested to know what tried and tested methods people use to keep birds off of their newly sown grass seed.

Thanks

Make a scarecrow. It will work long enough for your seed to germinate.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Thanks Redwing, If anyone has one of these I would love to see pics.

I was wondering, how effective (if at all) bird repellant grass seed was, anyone used it?

I don't find they touch it. Perhaps if you sow a little more heavily...some for me, some for the birds....

It might also be time of year. In autumn, there's less food, and newly sown grass seed is an easy meal. Do you have birdfeeders out or a feeding regime for them? That might be worth doing. If it's a small area you're sowing, you can stretch netting over it. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

This is my method which I've used a few times.

The netting is very cheap lightweight stuff off of ebay. It's available in several sizes, I think the ones I purchased were 3m X 5m when stretched out. The supports are bamboo canes cut to about 10" then knocked in the ground on a 1.5m or so grid. I cut a shallow 'X' in the exposed end of each cane which the netting locates into. The netting is pegged to the ground - I used landscape fabric pegs - again, off eBay. It takes a while to suss out the technique of putting the netting down as it stretches in both directions but start at one end, peg it down the work forwards in a parallel fashion.

We have no chance without netting or some kind of protection as we have two resident wood pigeons!
