What is this ?

Does anyone know what this plant is ? It was given to me as a chillie there are two plants one is producing green fruit the other is purple. The ones I've shown have fallen off the plant. they all feel sticky under the papery case. Any help would be gratefully receivereceived. ????

It looks like a species of Physalis. Some are edible (Cape Gooseberry) but I don't know about yours.
Hi Alan. Thanks for the reply. I agree it does look like a type of Physalis but I've never seen anything that colour before. I wonder what to do with the plant now. do you know if it will come back next year ?

Could they be Tomatilloes ?
Think you've got it Lilly - Tomatilloes - a friend and I both grew them one year (not a lot of success, just a few fruit - they seem to need a long growing season).
