Cutting Back Strawbs - Monty

NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813

A few weeks ago MD suggested we should clear away the straw and take shears to the strawberry plants which I did

Within a week they had started to produce new shoots and now have flowers which MAY result in berries

? Should I leave them to bloom OR shear them again

I beleive that the theory is that we need the plants energy to stay in it to give it a good start for next season but that is some 7 months away

Thoughts please friends and also the reason why please as I am keen to learn

Remove flowers to let the energy go into the plant, they will not fruit in any case. Try not to damage new young growth as that lets in disease. Burn all old straw and foliage cut off or bin it. I then leave the plants alone until Spring when any damage material is removed and feeding starts.

I have a few young plants which are producing some flowers and fruit, mainly because they're partially undercover. It's too late though for them to come to anything, so I've just taken them off. It doesn't really benefit the plants to try and produce anything unnecessarily, and I'd rather they were better plants next year.

It largely depends on your growing conditions and the age of the plants etc. though.

  • Ours are still flowering and fruiting! We've been picking since the beginning of summer...It's madness in a yummy kinda way! image

  • I enjoy picking my strawberris until Nov, only a small handful though.

I have picked the flowers off the plants about 8 days ago and some new ones have appeared

I will pick 80% of these off and just for an experiment let the other 20% truck on

    Thanks friends

Always worth experimenting newboy. Your own conditions will dictate what works best for you and the plants  image
