Bay tree - tidying up

We have not long moved and our garden has quite a big bay tree. At some point someone has cut off (but quite high up) the other trunks.

Are we okay just to cut down these other trunks to make it look a bit neater?

We also have a lot of suckers - how do we stop these from going wild?

    The suckers can come off anytime, nipped off just below ground level. Once it has shown that tendency it will always do it, I'm afraid. Leave the top until next May, or thereabouts, then adjust it to fit.
