You might be better now leaving the seed sowing to the early spring. I sowed some at the very end of March this year which germinated within 2 days and flowered very well in pots. The seed was mixed varieties so I've marked the nicer plants to try and overwinter the tubers for next year (haven't looked yet to see what tubers they've formed).
Yes, I was thinking that too Onopordum - but I am eager to get some more before winter sets in so ..nothing ventured. Do let us know whether the tubers have formed and their size - it will be interesting to know whether your seedlings have matured into tubers.
