Nerines
I planted some nerine bulbs in May in a container. They have got leaves but no flower stalks. Should they have some by now? Do they take a couple of years to get going?

I've bought quite a few different varieties and I don't think any of them flowered the first year (including several new ones this year). Flower spikes tend to appear when the leaves are dying off. They don't like being lifted, or sitting in cold wet compost, so worth trying to provide a bit of shelter in the winter, and placing beside a sunny wall in the summer.
They are supposed to flower when they get a little crowded so don't take them out. I am not yet convinced it's not just that the bulbs have to reach a certain size. I have struggled with them for years because of slug and snail damage, which just kills them. This year I had a few in a pot which I tried my best to protect, then ended up planting out in the front garden where I had a little sun and fewer slugs. They hadn't produced many leaves this year, so I thought that there would be no flowers (again). To my surprise I've just seen the first ever Nerine bud! So keep trying...
Thanks. They aren't congested so I'll just leave them in the pot in a sheltered place and see what happens next year.
Hi Alice,
Nerine are often reluctant to flower in their first year following planting, but once settled will flower prolifically.
They resent being disturbed, so avoid moving, apart from when it is necessary to split them, which is only once every four to five years.
Nerine flowers best when the bulbs are crowded tightly anyway.
They need a really sunny spot in summer in order to flower well - place the container in full sun and where it will not be overshadowed by neighbouring plants.
Water often when they first start into growth, then keep dry once they have finished flowering and overwinter in a frost-free place.
All being well, you should have flowers next autumn!
