Wet lawn- any tips?
Hi I wonder if anyone has any tips for me- I've recently bought a new house and the lawn in the back garden, which is quite small, is always very wet. The minute it rains the water just sits in puddles, particularly in the area near the patio. Even if it's been dry for a while when you walk on it its damp and squelchy. It doesn't get much sun either. Im thinking about getting an aerator, will this help? Or do I need to dig it all up and start again?!

Thing is, we have a dog so I'd like to keep the lawn if at all possible, but obviously it's no good as it is, being so wet! Maybe we will have to consider a patio garden with lots of pots
when i recently dug up my lawn I found old bricks, glass, paving slabs, lots of stones. I had to sieve tons of it and get a skip to remove lots of the rubbish bits. I dug down 30cm across the whole lawn area and also incorporated lots of organic matter like composted manure! My lawn is much more free draining now..
It doesn't get much sun, and you have issues with drainage, and you have a dog.
Helen - I love a lawn too, but those three things are going to make it very difficult. It's small as well. I'd reconsider having a lawn at all. You'll have to put in a bit of effort and money, or time, depending on your situation, to create a decent enough bit of grass.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
