New Purchase conflicting advice

Hi everyone.

I am new to this site and hope you experienced gardeners can help.

I live in France and I have purchased an Erable Japonais Acer Palmatum.  I have wanted one for years.

It is in a 3L pot.

The advice on the back of the info label is that it can be put in the ground (which I don't want to do) or in a pot for the patio. It says put into normal soil with some Bruyére which is ericaceous soil. Height 2 to 4m.  When I look on the internet it says it can go into normal soil.  As I have a habit of killing plants would love to advice on how to keep this one healthy and alive. I intend bringing it in to over winter it this year but hopefully in years to come leave it outside fleeced.

Also when I come to the UK soon, I am hoping to buy some liquid feed for it so any tips on best to buy would image be very helpful. Have put a  photo here to show type of tree I am talking about. Thanks in advance

  • And, I'd NOT pot it into the bigger pot until April, as that avoids the plant sitting in too much soggy compost over the cold wet winter months, potentially damaging the fine roots.  Verdun is spot on, acers really just want a good free-draining compost, ericaceous isn't always necessary. Unfortunately, shop purchased composts aren't anything like as good as the real thing and composted leaves make the best top dressing for so many plants, acers included, so save the fallen leaves this autumn.

  • Thanks both very much appreciate the advice.
