Autumn lawn care

Hoping to get out and do some annual lawn care this weekend.  Usually I scarify with the titan (love that little machine!) and then pick up with the lawnmower, autumn feed down and leave well alone.  I have been reading that many of you douse the lawn with the crane fly nematode and was thinking of doing the same as a precaution as my brother in law has experienced leatherjackets in a couple of previous years so def want to try and prevent any problems.  Just want to know if nematodes can still be applied post all the autumn care stuff.  Also when is the best time of year to apply please I notice on other threads some have been applying since August? Am I a little too late? Many thanks

    Hi Verdun & Copperdog,

According to the Green Gardener co uk it is still a good time to apply nematodes. The only reason I mention this is that after doing some work on my lawn this week I noticed an infestation of Chafer Grub larvae and and have therefore ordered some nematodes which I hope will come today. I applied them for leatherjackets earlier in September.

Of course it may be a sales ploy to push out stock but I'm inclined to go with their advice that it's still OK (& effective) to apply now. I know you have a lot of experience on this but I'm going to try and hit the chafer grubs anyway. There's that many I fear a total lawn wipeout unless I act now.

  • Thanks Verdun & Dave, I will see if I can source some.  Ive bought from Ladybird before but wondered if they sell them at the garden centre?

Also second question - should/can I still do that autumn care stuff now and then apply Nematodes in a couple of days...or should I just do the nematodes and de thatch etc in the spring?

Verdun will have a better grasp on this CD but I can't see any downside in removing the thatch first. That would give the nematodes a better chance of penetrating the soil as well.

I've had a slug explosion this year and was wondering whether to use Nematodes. I was also wondering if I had left it too late and whether I would be better waiting until spring.

Thanks Verdun,  I think I'll wait.
