Fruit and veg issues

Hi all,

New to this forum and new to the whole gardening thing too actually.

I'm mainly having issues with my tomatoes. The leaves are curling up and imagesome are going yellow. They just don't look so healthy. Any suggestions? imagethere are also some white patches on my pumpkin leaves and I'm not sure if it's normal or not. I'll put a picture in another reply.

Leaves on my chilis and sunflowers are also not forming properly in some places but not sure why. Pics to come.

The final and most frustrating issue is that my baby watermelons grow to about an inch then fall off the plant. I found some maggots in one.

Thanks for the help all :)

  • Hi Jack image

Whereabouts are you?  If you're in the UK it's a bit late in the season to be expecting anything from your tomatoes and squash plants now - I'm pulling mine up and preparing the garden for winter.

  • Ah yes. Should have mentioned that I'm tropical these days. Down in Tanzania.

    Cheers.

    Hello Jack,

I have absolutely no knowledge of horticulture in the tropics and all the various different plant pests and diseases you have in Tanzania, but tomatoes the world over are prone to magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium is needed for photosynthesis and deficiency can commonly occur with the over-use of high potassium fertilisers (e.g tomato feed), as plants take up potassium in preference to magnesium.

    Some supplementary magnesium might help.

I suppose you probably get powdery mildew in Tanzania too, which is probably what's affecting your squashes.

I can only view the top image of the tomatoes, as I'm having trouble viewing the others, I'm afraid!

Just a suggestion: why not start a new thread on the forum about gardening in the tropics? It would be an interesting thread to follow, especially during the depths of winter, here in the UKimage

You might get a bit better help from gardeners in the know as well!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'll do some further research on these things this week.

I didn't realise that there was a tropical gardening thread. I will make a new post there this week also.
