  • Oh goodness me!!  Ive only just managed to get back to the computer to find lots of messages!! I didn't realise my 'little idea' - (not so good idea) would invite such a debate!! image  I have enjoyed reading all the comments and will be guided by you 'proper' gardeners on here and perhaps give the snowdrops a try! thanks for that idea Lantana.  I'm def still in the heathers camp with you Verdun.  I didn't realise they were so offensive!  I really must try to be a little more stylish or keep my ideas to myself! image  This has really given me a good giggle - thanks everyone X

Copperdog - We all have our likes/dislikes over plants, shrubs and trees.  Also over flower colours.

It wouldn't do if we all followed the same trend.

  • Its was Busy-Lizzie!! thanks Busy-Lizzie great idea!  thanks for letting me know Lantana.  No, no, no def not the garish fake coloured ones!  I planted up some heathers etc in a couple of troughs last year and looked lovely and wintery - will try and find the pic to post.  Thanks again all.  Not sure I'll get any gardening done this Saturday and the rain looks pretty full on.  image

Glad you liked my idea, works well for me.

I love roses, mine aren't diseased or unshapely and they have lots of flowers.

How could you dislike my lovely climbing The Pilgrim?

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • imageThese are the skimmias 2 years on. I do love autumn tones

  • Beautiful Roses Buzy-Lizzie.  I had a beautiful rambling yellow rose when we first moved in almost 20 years ago but the trellis it was all on fell down one winter and having 3 small children and no interest in gardening we just got rid of it all! image Would love it now tho.

For me, heathers come under the same umbrella as hanging baskets, window boxes, lavender hedges . They CAN look lovely , but for every good one you see, you see a hundred horrors.

I totally accept it's pretty much all down to maintenance, but lots of folk don't bother.

I have no problem with bareness in winter, be it roses, hostas or other things. I love the resurgence in Spring and the contrast between the garden in the season.

Lantana, unfortunately, our passion flower was not only cut down to the ground, but Hubby thought he'd dug out the roots, and the flippin' thing is still coming back.

Sprayed with SBK  a while back so hopefully , no more next year.

    Devon.
