Thick Thatch

I have just used a Bosch AVR 1100 to rake and scarify my lawn. About half of the lawn (25 sq m) has this thick layer (2 - 3 cm) of what I believe to be thatch. If I pull it up I'm left with bare soil. Is there any alternative to removing the lot and re-seeding?
Thank you.

Morning Blue Lagoon the photo above is the moss and thatch from lawns I am renovating in fact I had around 5 trailer loads after scarifying  each lawn 3 different ways.

If you scarify heavily it is most likely you will need to seed and dress, how ever gentle scarification should do the job but it will take longer to rid your lawn of moss and thatch.

Point to note you will always get thatch as each year the grass dies and new grass grows that's why lawn care should be done every year to keep your lawn looking good

    Photos in order scarifier

    Then solid tine aerator

Then seed and top dressing spreader

Then a dragnet to push the seed and sand into the holes created by the aerator

The first time you do it you will think you have no grass left. Be brave! Just oversaw and do it more lightly in following years. I normally do mine in the spring.

Yep Verdon is spot on we become lazy and expect our lawn to care for its self if it was our car what a state we would have have a great day it's lawn number 2 today

  • its the perfect time to seed lawns now, lots of rain regularly and the grounds nice and warm to help the seed germinate and root nicely before the winter truly hits, you'll then have a nice thick health lawn for next year.
