Planting tree close to house
I have a small london back garden which currently has a multi stem silver snow queen birch and a blood good acre towards the back 7 metres from the house.
I want to plant an ornamental tree within 2 metres of the house at the end of our boarder against fence next to some bamboo and am wondering what i can plant so close to the house? I would love to plant another birch but everywhere i look says it must be planted at least 6 metres away.
Can i plant an Olive?
Any help would be great!

It's not a good idea. It's hard to know what effects there could be in a few or a few dozen years. It might be fine, but there's a reasonable chance it won't and is it worth the risk? You could create all sorts of problems from broken drains, damp, cracking, settlement, even subsidence.
Could you not plant a tree in a really big pot and stand it in that position, rather than planting it in the ground?
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
Olives are slow growing so I wouldn't expect root problems but they do grow very well in containers, especially in the microclimate of London where deep frosts are pretty much unheard of in recent decades.
Don't do it. You have your foundations to think of.
Thanks so much everyone! Great advice, I'll steer clear and plant an olive in a pot in stead!
