Trees in trouble!

Our Sorbus Sargentiana which is 12 years old has suddenly turn (terminally) brown - took a few days in August for it to get very sick.

It now has quick a crack in the trunk...

Next to it on one side is a Quince which has never done particularly well and is now also very sad...

I wonder if the two are related and in any case does anyone have any ideas as to which has caused these problems.

We would like to replace the trees with a healthy Quince and an ordinary Rowan tree...

I enclose pictures of the trees -- the other nearby ones look healthy!

  • That's been quite common this year, on this forum and elsewhere, too. Sudden cracks like that can occur in extreme cold, especially on sites where drainage is poor (frost crack). Are you sure it's not been like that since winter? The crack is often on the sunnier side of the tree.

The quince just looks like it needs a hug!  Bit of tlc, grass taken away from round the bottom for a metre or so (it competes much more than you'd think), and a good feed next April.

  • I wonder if your Sorbus has been infected by Fireblight. It is a bacterial disease that affects Sorbus [ also cotoneaster, crataegus and Pyracantha ] and causes rapid death. There is no cure and all parts othe plant above ground need to be disposed of.
