These are mystery holes that have appeared in our lawn over the past couple of weeks. It's just as if someone has speared the lawn with a crowbar, twisted it and pulled it out.
the holes are random rather than in a walking pattern, they are about an inch deep,and most are quite smooth and purposful
any ideas would be welcom, thanks.

Squirrels possibly.They often make little holes to bury stuff.
Sometimes birds follow them and remove the buried treasure
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Could also be rooks or other birds digging for leatherjackets or chafer grubs - the last pic does look like the grass may be being attacked from below.
