What to do with these Penstemon?

CraighBCraighB Posts: 758

Hi, I bought three perennial Penstemon from the lady down the street from me and I was wondering how I go about cutting them back in spring? As you can see from the photo there is one quite thick woodyish stem with other little flowering stems coming off it. Do I chop this one stem right to the base in spring and will more stems grow from the base?

Thank :)

Thanks Verdun. I have already taken some cuttings as I did read they are not completely hardy. I will protect these by keeping all the young plants and seedlings that are in pots close to the house and bunched together to minimise chances of frost damage.

I can even go back to the lady down the street for more if I lost a lot of them. She literally has a mini garden center in her front garden and trusts people to post the money through her letterbox. I've had Astrantia's, Penstemon, Foxglove Lutea, Campanula's etc and all for £1-£2 each! Bargain :)
