Tree Identification

Hi,

I came across this tree the other day and  I am interested in what it is but have not been able to figure it out. The orange berries made me think Rowan, but the leaves are not right. Does anyone have any idea?

Thank you

  • Might be Ilex verticillata, aka winterberry.  The cultivar Winter gold has orange berries, as does Goldfinch.

Have you any photos that clearly show the shape of the berry, (both ends) and how they attach to the plant?

  • Agree nut, need better photos to be sure.  I noticed the large clusters of berries at the top when I zoomed in which look typical of winterberry to me.  It's an old and big one if it is though! image

  • No unfortunately no berry pictures as they were quite high up! But thank you.

  • Got alternate leaves and the twigs of old cherry tree, but I can't think of one with small yellow fruits.

  • Done some research - fun. I've found malus prattii, which has red or yellow fruits. Leaf description fits, too, varying from two and a half to five inches long. Rare. There is one in a park in Northumberland somewhere with yellow fruits and one at Kew, apparently.
