What can I plant under Dicentra?
Hi all,
I have a rather large Dicentra 'bleeding heart' in a shady corner and it looks great in spring. However, once summer is here and I've cut-back all the yellow foliage I'm left with what you can see in the picture. (and it's even worse in the winter when the hostas (just out of shot) have disappeared).
So, can anybody recommend plants that would thrive here under a large dicentra and all-day shade? Late-flowering and evergreen would be a bonus.
Many thanks!

Vinca?
Hellebores (H. niger for Christmas and January, H. x hybridus for January and later), epimedium, various species and cultivars and some of the heucheras and tiarellas - many cultivars, countless different colours of leaf, too.

I have mine with hardy geraniums and the variegated form of ground elder which is pretty and not a thug. Geranium macrorhizum forms have scented leaves and their foliage turns red in winter.
Great, that gives me some ideas. Many thanks for the suggestions!
Maybe the colder winters control it here but it really isn't invasive at all for me. In fact, I sometimes have to encourage it! Looks fab in spring with the blue of forget-me-nots and the pink of the geranium macrorhizum and the white dicentras at the back.
When can I cut back the foliage? The flowers are gone.
thanks
Hi Jean, I cut mine back earlier this week.
My foliage doesnt go back in the summer and the plant still looks good until winter. Its the white one with greyish leaves.
