I've got a mahoosive ancient beech tree in my garden. The canopy touches the ground in summer when it's in full leaf. I've not got round to 'dealing' with the area under it yet (it's on the list ) so the only things growing there found there own way in. No grass for the most part - too dry and shady. No nettles or docks either - just about the only place in the garden where there aren't. But there are foxgloves (the wild purple sort) near the canopy edge on the north side, cyclamen right in the deepest shade by the tree roots and hellebore foetidus under the 'drip line' on the south side.
