Daffodil and tulip bulbs

  • Thanks Nutcutlet. The last can't be alliums as we have never ever had any aliums. Got some bulbs to plant for next spring, but never had them in the past.

All the label said was wonder flower. I just looked it up. It says 'Ornithogalum dubium'. Is that the same as clivia? I cannot find any photos of the bulbs of either.

Why do you say the daffs are worth keeping but not the tulips? Do they looks more like they might flower?

tulips tend not to flower after the first year (except for the little species) not definitely won't but probably not much. Daffs are reliable.

no clivia is something else orange, I don't know an orange ornithogalum but it could be that odd shaped one between the purple ones.

  • Oh..okay.Perhaps I should put the tulip bulbs into a pot and just see if anything happens? I have some new ones for the flower bed anyway.

Some of these daffodils were ones which did not produce flowers. I remember because they were just green stalks. I took them out when planting other stuff and they were very overcrowded anyway. Can ones which didn't flower one year, flower the next year?

they might if they got a good feed before the leaves were allowed to die back naturally. tbh I'd dump all the little bits and offshoots unless you're going to seriously grow on and feed every year,  I don't dig mine up (except by mistake) so the offshoots just grow alongside the flowering ones til they are ready to flower

  • No I ended up cutting most of the leaves and taking them out this year instead of letting them die naturally,I know your not meant to do that but I needed the space to plant other things and since they didn't flower I removed them.

Thing is we don't normally do that so I know they can multiply like mad as we used to have a whole flower bed of daffodils for years. That was a different story - the area was then taken over by 'onion weed' and I had to through most of those daffodil bulbs when I took the onion weed out.

But with these ones I think they just need sorting and throw away the bulbils as you suggest.

As for the ornithogalum, it seems to also be called sun star and I found this web page with some pictures of the bulb about half way down: http://garden.org/plants/photo/51844/

Do you think it could be any of mine?

i don't recognise that bulb in your pics but not impossible.

Not much hope of flowers from those that had the leaves cut off, especially if they've already failed to flower.

    What sort are they?

  • Hmm I didn't recognise it either. So no idea about the 3 round potato looking ones?

Well we have been saying let's just get some new daffs as it's pretty cheap for a big bag, but I just thought it might be nice to give them one last chance.

Not sure what type the daffs were...pretty big normal ones if I remember the ones which did flower. As for the tulips we had some really nice ones.

the more fancy the tulip the less like to reflowerimage

Those last ones aren't your onion weed returned to haunt you are they? Onions are alliums.

  • I hope not, I was on my hands and knees for about 3 days clearing it in the freezing cold! It was a nightmare lol.

Is that what you meant when you said they might be alliums? You weren't referring to those big purple flowered ones, but some little ones?

I've just realised there could be some crocus, dutch iris and even maybe bluebells in the mix also as I have seen those before in the flower bed where these were all taken from.

  • The last 3 look like bluebells according to google images image

But I can't see why I'd have only 3 of those and last year I only remember having an invasion of Spanish Bluebells, which also took ages to clear out. I wouldn't have saved any of the bulbs. So I'm still confused.
