Flopping cala lillies

Wakeshine - I keep my calla lily dry and in the dark until spring. I have a basement but you could try your carport.

     Thanks Joyce21

  • Just to update - this evening I transferred them into terracotta pots - but it was a bit of a disaster. The pots are those 'urn' shaped ones and did not have a wide enough mouth for me to get both hands plus the plant into. With the small plant, which had two stems, both stems just snapped off (see below - it is laid horizontal). It was very difficult to repot due to the soil all falling away, then the stems snapped. Will they regrow? Basically it's a pot with compost in it now. I do not know if it will grow back.

I was trying to do this in a fairly dark car port, which didn't help.

With the bigger one, this was also a total mess with two stems snapping off at the base. And it is still flopping. The plants were very difficult to handle with the stems being very floppy and apparently delicate and breakable, and the compost being soaking wet and falling everywhere.

I do not know if I have done the right thing. I will try and post a photo of how they look at present when it's daylight tomorrow. I really hope they grow again and fill the pots like yours paula.conway.

  • Hi wakeshine, never mind. They should still be alright as long as the rhizomes are not damaged, soggy and mouldy. If I were you, I would put them in the pots you have but use dry compost, not wet or damp. Hopefully they will be ok. Fingers crossed.

  • Thank you paul.conway. I don't know if the rhizomes were soggy...but I do wonder why the stems just snapped off so suddenly like that. Thanks - hope they grow back!

  • Here they are now. Still a tad droopy but hopefully recovering in the terracotta. As you can see the small one has nothing! Not sure if anything will grow up from the remaining roots.

Wakeshine: the leaves will turn yellow and can then be removed before storing the pots. I wouldn't expect them to perk up at this stage. Mine have no leaves now.

  • Oh okay Joyce21- are yours just nothing then? Or do they have stalks but no leaves?

Once the stalks and leaves were yellow I cut them off.

  • Okay. On mine nothing has gone yellow yet. The small pot, stems broke when repotting and the bigger one as as per picture. Will see what happens!
