Autumn planting help

I have just taken on an allotment and am a very novice gardener. What can I plant in Sept or Oct outside and should i get it started indoors or just plant the seeds in the ground?

Fruit and veg Expand + Sow hardy greens, such as kale, land cress, pak choi, mizuna, lamb's lettuce and mustard, for winter pickings Prune out all the fruited canes of summer raspberries, cutting down to the base, and tie in new canes to supports Pot up herbs, such as chives and parsley, and place on a sunny windowsill to use during winter Start sowing hardy varieties of broad beans and peas for early crops next year Plant onion and shallot sets in a sunny spot, 10cm apart, with the tip just showing above the soil
Or dig it all over and add compost or manure in preparation for next spring.
I agree with the above comments about preparing the soil instead. One problem with growing stuff over the winter is that it stops you doing that! As scroggin said, if you have a small bit of good ground, garlic is another one which can be planted now.
Allotment Month by Month by Alan Buckingham is a good guide. Actually it's great time to sow green manure.
I have covered the entire plot with manure but I'd like to dig and plant a small section now. I was thinking of broad beans and cabbage but can I plant the seeds straight in the ground or do I need to buy plug plants?
