Apple Harvesting

We have a howgate wonder apple tree with some whoppers growing, the first year we've had apples. The nursery said harvest november, eat December. Do the apples need storing before eating or can they be eaten or cooked straight away?

  • The easiest way to tell if they are ready is to gently lift and twist half a turn.  If the apple comes away in your hand it is ready.  You can eat straightaway or store.  If you store them, make sure they don't touch each other (placing them on cardboard egg box bottoms placed in a larger box is one way of doing that.)

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I agree with Bob.

If you like a sharp eating apple you can eat Howgate Wonder freshly harvested, however they mellow a bit when stored and will keep for months in a cool frostfree place.  A marvellous dual purpose apple.

  • Thanks, I'll save some egg boxes. I'm hoping they'll feature in Christmas dinner...
