Acer bleeding
We have a mature Acer palmateum osakazookie, maybe not spelled correctly. It is quite mature and the trunk is about five inches diameter near the base. We have noticed that it appears to be bleeding near the base on one side. We can actually see a slow trickle from it. ny ideas please?

Not usually a good sign! Possibly phytophthora, bacterial canker just starting. Nothing you can do, but keep it well fed and watered next year, especially if we have a dry start to the spring. However, if it is that, it's terminal and just matter of time, one, three, five years? BUT, it may not be. There may have been a small injury (maples can bleed freely if a wound is caused) or a period of drought can cause a tree to suffer internal damage causing a crack to form and bleeding to occur.

Very many thanks for the reply. Next dry spell and out comes the hose.
It was weeping quite profusely this morning, but now it has stopped and dried up. The bark in that area is cracked and appears to be slightly raised
