Sambucas in Trouble

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with my Sambucas. It is dying back and wilting. Will it recover if i cut it back hard?

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi Verdun,

    Thanks for the reply.

The weather here has been quite mixed, with plenty of rain lately. I did lose another identical sambucas to this same problem earlier in the year so I presume it is Verticilium wilt. I dug out that one.

I would like to keep this sambucas if I can as it fits in very well.

Would I be better to cut it to 2-3 foot? Or just dig it out?

  • Thanks for the advice Verdun and Riley. I have cut it back for the time being and will wait and see. There are plenty looking healthy buds on the branches, but it does seem to be Verticilium. I wil dig it out soon I reckon, but might give it a few weeks to see how it goes.

Quick question? Are my neighbouring trees and shrubs in danger as well or is Verticilium specific to plant type. EG can VW spread from Sambucas to my Maples close by?

  • Hi, just an update and request for some help plz.

I cut back the sambucas and it appears to be budding from certain old wood stems. However there is a clear fungus?! goo type substance emerging from some stems. I have attached pictures. Can anyone identify this substance please?!
