    Rosebay willowherb

admired by some (OK, me) as a great plant and food for the larvae of the Elephant Hawkmoth.

Despised as a weed by the neat and tidy brigade

I mistook it for something else. Better check my garden again!

It is rosebay willowherb. Very pretty but liable to self seed everywhere.

If you look at the individual flowerheads up close, they are absolutely exquisite. You can even buy a white version from Crocus!

the white, and the light pink, are sometimes said to be non-invasive. Don't believe it

This is very hardy - apparently it grew in nooks and crannies in bomb sites after WW2 and earned the name "fireweed" as a result.

I think it is spectacular along the roadside when in full bloom - a real splash of colour.  But it is prolific, so I wouldn't want it in a garden setting!

    Hi Nut image

  • Brilliant. Thanks everyone. I do quite like them even if they are seen as a weed!
