Moving plants
Morning all,
my neighbour has just informed me that I need to move some plants for his scaffolders to put their stuff up for their extension.
I have a nicely established peony shrub that I worried wont survive the move. Any tips? God knows what variety it is but its smallish and just leaves now so hopeflly it will survive. ????

If it's established then it'll have a mighty lump of a root system and you'll need a good spade. They say peonies resent being moved, but I've never failed yet. Water it well a few days in advance of the move. Have a site prepared for it, then lift it with as much of a root ball as possible. Don't fret too much, though, if the soil falls off the roots, which it may do at this time of year. Put it in with some good compost (mixed with the soil you took out), then WATER IT WELL again.

I'm perplexed by the neighbours telling YOU, YOU need to move plant for THEIR builders!!
I'm sure scaffolders have worked around more complex obstacles than your plants.
I agree with Hostafan. I think its a bit cheeky of them. You could be equally as cheeky by denying access to/on YOUR land.
I'm with Verdun on that. My blood is slowly simmering since my last post. If I wasn't such a polite person
I would be rounding up my protest group now!
Definitely no - neighbour needs to ask permission and also ensure his builders do no damage to your property including plants and access.
Having said that, the critical thing when moving peonies it to plant them at teh same depth as before because too deep buries the flowering buds and too shallow exposes them to frost and drought. Get it just right and they re-establish well and produce flowers.
