Help with Merton Glory Cherry

Hi everyone, and a huge thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer me. Am incredibly grateful to be a member of this site.

I've purchased a Merton Glory Cherry tree, and have concerns about it's health and wellbeing, and also any possible repurcusions it's health may have on other fruit trees I own.

The leaves are going black from the outside edge of the leaf spreading inwards. These leaves are also curling tightly inwards, and rapidly going brown, again, from outside of leaf in, and are then dying.

I have contacted seller who said it's normal Autumnal leaf shedding, but this doesn't feel right to me. I have son photos taken but am not sure how to post them up yet as this I my first post. Am concerned that it may have health issues that foul impact upon my other Rivers Cherry and apple trees.

Would be so incredibly grateful for any help or advice you may be able to offer me.

Hi lynette and welcome to the forum. Can I just ask if the Cherry tree is planted out into the garden? A picture certainly would help and to upload a picture you click on the little camera icon above the top right hand corner of the text box. If you follow the instructions and your picture is not too big then it should upload.

From your description it could be many things but I do not think you need to worry too much about your other trees. Fingers crossed you manage to upload the picture/s.

  • Thank you so much for your reply and warm welcome.

The tree is in a 5L pot and is around 4.5ft tall. No bugs present or holes in leaves. Does have some side shoots that look lovely, but most have these dead looking leaves on. Was worried I may have been some kind of blight but had read Tha Cherries can be pretty resistant.

I am using a mobile app and when I click on camera it takes me to my pics, I click on the pic and it takes me back my post but pic doesn't appear. I shall try on my laptop as appreciate I'm probably asking too much without the photo.

Thank you so much for your kindness ?

I think that your tree would be happier in the ground and at first guess I would say that it may be hungry and thirsty. Cherries are indeed very tough which is why I do not think you need to worry.

  • Hi Ladybird4 have posted some pics above. Tree only arrived yesterday so will be planted ASAP. We had horrendous storms in London today so had to put it on hold temporarily. Gave it a feed when it came out of box so am hoping that will help it.

Once again, I appreciate the help you have given me so very much. I'm a newbie to fruit trees so have a lot T learn. Thank you again.

Your tree is looking pretty normal lynette. Once in the ground it will naturally lose all its leaves soon. Don't be too disappointed if you don't get any fruit in its first year - until its settled - but it should go on to be more and more fruiful. This also applies to any other young fruit trees you have.
